Should I Invest in Z-Cards For My Model Toddler?

There are only a few key items that can help a model on their career path. The modelling portfolio is one such important tool, but have you heard of z-cards?

While not essential, z-cards can certainly be a handy addition to a model’s arsenal.

What is a Z-Card?

A z-card is a card featuring a model’s work information like their measurements, height and clothing size, as well as an assortment of modelling images.

They can be different shapes and sizes, but are most typically around the same shape and size as a credit card. This is because they slot in easily to a purse or wallet and can be carried around at all times.

Children and toddlers can also have these handy items. Carried by their parents or guardians, they feature the contact information and some of the toddler’s best modelling photos.

Why Have Z-Cards?

Z-cards are used to make sharing information easier. In the fashion industry, networking is a key element to success. As the saying goes, ‘it’s not what you know – it’s who you know!’

By carrying some z-cards around, the passing of information is made far quicker and easier. It’s also a great way to help market your child and show potential employers your child’s experience and expertise as a model.

What If My Toddler Has No Experience?

Everyone starts somewhere, so don’t panic if your child has yet to gain any experience or modelling photos.

A great way to gain experience if you are a beginner is to book in with a professional photography studio. This way, you can allow your toddler the experience of a real-life photoshoot and check that it is something they enjoy doing. You can also purchase your best photos, which can then be used in your child’s modelling portfolio and on their z-cards.

Designing Your Z-Cards

There are some agencies that will design your z-cards from beginning to end for a cost. If you’re handy with Photoshop, however, this is something you can easily do yourself.

Remember – the z-card is only small, so you will have to be very selective about which photos you include on there. You should feature only two or three photos so as to avoid the images being too small and cramped. You should also try to select photos that are clear, high-quality and that don’t have a busy background. Try to include at least one headshot as well as one full-length body shot.

The other side of your toddler’s z-card should hold their key modelling information. This includes:

  • Their height
  • Their age (or clothing size age) and shoe size
  • Their contact information
  • Their hair and eye colour
  • Their modelling agency information (if they have one)

As your toddler will be growing quickly, you will have to ensure that you update the z-cards regularly.
